Adventures With- Grace O’Malley:

Challenge: To design packaging for a kid’s toy, in this case, a doll, to be interactive, sustainable and fun for children and their caretakers.

Solution: We drew inspiration from packaging that we grew up with, but aimed to reduce our footprint. We believe that caring for the environment has to start young, especially seeing how fast our planet seems to be deteriorating. Through material research and design exploration, Grace and I created packaging that had a longer life cycle and was entirely recyclable. The recycling instructions are easy and extending the life cycle is a fun, day-time activity for all.
With recycled paper packaging that can be cut up and turned into a ship and jute ties that keep the sails up, Adventures With is just the first step to a sustainable future for all kinds of packaging.

Materials: Jute to tie the play-pieces and doll to the box, recycled paper with non-uv ink for the packaging, and polymer for the play pieces.

Creating interactive, playful and sustainable packaging is as easy as 1, 2, 3.

Step 1: Let the kids tear open the packaging at the seams, and help them cut the outlined shapes.

Step 2: Fold the shapes on the dotted lines. The children may need help with this step.

Step 3: Glue the corresponding pieces to each other. Say to yourself, “Mess is part of the Process”.

Every single step of this packaging is designed to create a feeling of togetherness between adults and children.
